Little Lamb - One Size

I was so prepared to hate this nappy...

Essex County Council are trying to encourage cloth nappy use in many ways, but the most obvious are by refunding £30 on a nappy purchase and by sending out free samples. I got my refund a while ago and requested a sample. Here is the website if you'd like to apply for the same.

My initial thoughts were pretty negative, but I'll come to that.

This is a birth to potty, pocket nappy which came with 2 bamboo inserts. It has popper fastenings and comes in a range of bright colours, although I've seen on the Little Lamb website that they do prints too. I'm a fan of the 'jungle' print and the parrots! RRP £10 (but we got it for free).

Here - have a look at mine...

It has three rows of poppers for the birth to potty sizing, where the MioSolo just has two. I'm not sure I noticed that it made a massive difference.

When it first dropped out of the parcel I thought it felt flimsy and cheap. The inside is fleece, which is rather thin looking. The opening to put the bamboo inserts is huge and is only elasticated along one side - which is mainly to allow for freedom of movement while wearing.
There is a little flap that goes over the insert to keep it from escaping.
Stuffing this for the first time wasn't as easy as I expected. I mean, it isn't hard. But I'm used to the MioSolo, which has a handle on the insert! I found it tricky to get it to lie nice and flat, but once it was flat it did stay flat even when I wriggled the nappy around a bit.
Bamboo liner. It comes with 2 of these.

You can see the bamboo liner inside here.
So by this point I was willing to try, but not convinced I'd like it. It just felt a bit cheap. But I prewashed and next opportunity popped it on Flower.

It looked significantly less bulky than I'm used to. It actually looked quite comfy. It was only at this point that I thought about the elastic, which is reasonably soft and gentle, but tight enough to contain. Flower seemed pretty happy in it. So happy in fact that she put it to the maximum test just minutes later. Only then did I realise that in my excitement I'd forgotten to put in a liner. D'oh.

So after less than 10 minutes of use it headed back to the wash. I was worried that the insert might not just fall out (imagining hoicking mucky pads out with my hands - bleurgh), but not a problem. They came out all on their own. (I've decided I'm going to start tumble drying the inserts, so it's good that they separate easily).

It dries quickly. I see that this is the significant advantage of pocket over true all in one nappies. I can dry the insert separately and the thin fleece on the inside dries really quickly. In fact the actual nappy dried in around an hour, so if I tumble dry the inserts I can really cycle through these nappies quickly.

Issues
Getting the insert to lie flat isn't the easiest thing in the world. But by no means the hardest.

Mr OneLess is NOT a fan of the poppers. I agree. We both found it tricky to get a good fit. I think practice would help, but there was no practice needed for velcro.

Unfortunately the third time we used it we had a bit of a leak. Not sure if it was user error or the nappy, but she had damp patches on her leggings around the back legs. My feeling is that as Flower is moving around (and she's a real wriggler - just starting to crawl and never still!) the insert bunches up, leaving the legs unprotected.

You can just see the nappy in action here - see how wriggly she is?!
Overall
Pros:
Fast drying (like, mega)
Easy to choose different inserts for different occasions.
Somewhat slim fitting, with soft elastic.

Cons:
Poppers rather than velcro fastening was a pain (but may get easier with practice)
Insert moved while wearing, leading to leaks

I'm definitely happy with this nappy and we'll carry on using it. I tried using both bamboo inserts at the same time, but it was impossible to get both lying flat at the same time, so I gave up. I might have had more luck with a sturdier insert, like our hemp ones, so I might try that in the future. I definitely won't be using this at night. It's also worth noting that even if we'd paid for the nappy, I still think these are decent value for money.
