Totsbots Peenut

It's been a while since my last post as my phone/computer connection has been playing up, which makes it tricky to get pictures available. But I *think* it is now fixed!

When I started investigating cloth nappies, Totsbots was a brand that seemed to come up a lot. And with good reason - they have a well considered selection of nappies with the sweetest prints around!

I've already reviewed their Easyfit Star, which I love but find slow to dry. I used the Bamboozle for a while, and will review that at some point too. Their other major design is the Peenut. It is very different to anything I've discussed on this blog before!

It is a birth to potty 2 part system (AKA all in two), with a separate wrap (the waterproof bit) and bamboo insert that pops in to keep it from moving around too much. The insert is actually 2 parts, so you can use the smaller, the larger or the two inserts snapped in together (3 in 1)! So lots of flexibility here to meet your needs.
It comes in the fab prints that the Easyfit Star comes in!
In this picture the BTP snaps are on the 2nd setting (middle size).

This picture shows the pad in its maximum setting - with both pads poppered in.
You can also see the flaps at the front and back.

Here you can see that there are 2 layers. You could un-popper them and just use one if you didn't need as much absorbency. I suspect these would make excellent nappies for the potty training toddler (although they aren't pullups).

I love the concept of using the same wrap and simply snapping different inserts in. Unfortunately at the moment Flower simply wees a bit too much. By the time she's worn her nappy for a couple of hours, I don't much fancy holding the insert to unpopper it. Nevertheless, I think this is a fab nappy and I'm not getting rid! I'm confident that as she gets older and stops having several milk feeds every day (and through the night, boooo), she'll be less wet and the Peenut will really come into its own.

I find that the crotch of the nappy is very wide, which reinforces my idea that these would suit a larger baby or toddler better. Below I've compared the ecopipo (firefighter) nappy with the Peenut, and I think you can see that it is noticably wider. Not a problem for bigger babies (probably an advantage for many!) but for my little girl it causes it to bunch up and move around, so we get leaks.
Comparison of width of ecopipo and peenut, showing that the peenut is quite wide.

One huge advantage for us is that you can use the Peenut wrap separately. I've been using it over our Bamboozle, and I've also used it over little lamb fitted nappies. I've got a few prefolds that I'd like to try and I'll probably try them with this wrap as it is a good fit without the super wide inserts!

Since you could only change the inserts, this is potentially an excellent nappy for saving money and keeping a nice small stash. I think you could manage with around 4/5 wraps and 12-15 inserts. The kit from Totsbots includes 8 wraps and 12 inserts, which I would have thought was enough, although I'd be tempted to buy a couple more inserts just to be totally sure I have enough if I forgot to put a wash on!

I met someone recently who is using the Peenut at night for their *nearly* dry toddler. They love it as they can use the wrap a couple of nights in a row, chuck the pad in with the rest of the washing and it provides enough protection for their little monkey when she needs it.

Issues
We've had several issues, but all related to Flower's age. When she is bigger and wees a bit less often (at least I think that's what happens!), I think this will be a fantastic nappy for us. I can see it working fantastically when we're getting closer to potty training too.
Too wide for her, causes the insert to bunch up.
Once the insert is soggy I don't really want to unpop it, so I'm washing the whole thing every time, which isn't really the point of this style of nappy!

Overall:
Pros
Very cute prints!
Easy to use
Potential for very compact stash.
Able to use the wrap with other nappies, notably the bamboozle stretch (also made by Totsbots)
Cons
Possibly unsuitable for very young or very small babies
May be unpleasant to unpop wet pads from the wrap

I really like this nappy, and I won't be getting rid of it as I think it's just waiting for Flower to get to the right stage! I'm not one for wishing away these years as I'm trying hard to treasure every moment, but I can look forward to being able to use these in a few months!
